WoodStock Living Labs

Living Labs are collaborative innovation environments where real-world experiments are conducted to address societal challenges and develop innovative solutions. They offer a dynamic space for co-creation, exploration, and implementation. They integrate end users, researchers, policymakers, and industry partners in a participatory and creative process.

The WoodStock Living Labs are strategically spread across Europe to use the unique resources, knowledge, skills, and legal frameworks of each region.

The WoodStock Living Lab approach is based on the NEB Compass, a guiding framework to integrate the New European Bauhaus principles and criteria in the wood construction sector.

Co-creation workshops

Each of the six Living Labs will run collaborative co-creation workshops, in which participants will:

  • generate new ideas
  • brainstorm solutions
  • discuss challenges
  • share insights
  • analyse problems together

WoodStock organises six types of co-creation workshops, each addressing a different aspect of sustainable wood construction. Each of the six Living Labs will organise several co-creation workshops.

Co-creation workshop: co-development of storylines and narratives

Develop high-level storylines and narratives for the future of wood in Europe, which include the evolution of wood supply and demand.

Co-creation workshop: zero-waste solutions through design: development through co-creation

Co-create zero-waste and circular solutions for innovative and sustainable product and building concepts.

Co-creation workshop: zero-waste solutions through design: validation

  • validate zero-waste solutions through qualitative and quantitative assessments
  • gather the perspectives of key players on the co-creation and development process for product and building designs
  • assess the potential trade-offs between environmental, social, and economic values related to the circular concepts and products that are developed

Co-creation workshop: assessing wood industry policies, norms and standards

Co-develop a conceptual framework that identifies and analyses the sector’s challenges and opportunities for underutilised wood.

Co-creation workshop: creating the ‘European Wood Construction Observatory’

Create innovative solutions for the European Wood Construction Observatory to ensure its sustainability beyond the lifespan of the WoodStock project.

icon well being

Co-creation workshop: stimuli for the analysis of human health and well-being

Develop stimuli for the analysis of human health and well-being, by co-creating building elements made from underutilised wood.

Ghent design course 2024

Student courses

In the design courses for architecture and engineering students, students will collaborate with local partner SMEs, contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers guided by the WoodStock research team through design, prototyping and testing. They focus on exploring sustainable design practices, developing zero-waste concepts, and building blueprints by using underutilised wood.

International school

The Living Lab ‘the Green Village’ in the Netherlands will organise a one-week international school at TU Delft, in cooperation with the Living Labs from Norway and Poland. This international school will focus on the creative use of hardwood and damaged, low-quality, and post-consumer wood in building design.

Students from WoodStock’s partner organisations will be encouraged to apply for this international school. An open call will be organised to give all EU-wide architecture and engineering students this opportunity.
